David A. Bell is Sidney and Ruth Lapidus Professor in the Department of History at Princeton University. He is the author of six books, including The Cult of the Nation in France
(2001) and The First Total War
(2007). His new book, on charisma and power in the age of revolutions, is forthcoming from Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He writes regularly for publications that include The Nation
and The London Review of Books
. In 2018-19 he will be the John and Constance Birkelund Fellow at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library.
